What Are Implant Dentures?
Implant dentures combine the base and false teeth of a traditional denture with titanium implant posts. The implants are surgically attached to the jawbone and placed below the gumline, so they’re not visible to onlookers. The denture, meanwhile, can be customized to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Connecting these two parts with a small “abutment” produces a natural-looking restoration that doesn’t slip out of place.
Technically, there are two types of implant dentures. Depending on your needs, we may recommend:
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
These are permanently “fixed” in place so that neither the dental implants or the denture can be removed. While they’re incredibly convenient, they require between four to eight implant posts, and may not be the best option for patients with poor jawbone density.
Removable Implant Dentures
These can be removed on a regular basis, meaning you’ll have to take them out of your mouth for daily cleanings. However, they only require two to five implant posts, and can be an excellent alternative for patients who can’t receive a fixed/permanent implant denture.
The Implant Denture Process
First, you’ll meet with Dr. Morgan for a consultation. He’ll review your health history and perform an oral exam, keeping an eye out for conditions like gum disease or poor jawbone density that may have to be addressed before moving forward with your treatment.
Next, Dr. Morgan will give you a referral to a local dental implant specialist for oral surgery. This specialist will have advanced training, enabling them to safely and accurately place your dental implants along your jawbone.
For about three to six months after your implant placement, you’ll have to stick to a soft food diet so that osseointegration can occur. This is a natural process where your jawbone and implants will fuse together.
After osseointegration is complete, we’ll be able to create your customized dentures. Once we attach them to the abutments, your treatment will be considered complete!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Most adults with good oral health are good candidates for implant dentures. However, if you do have an active case of cavities or gum disease, or have a weakened jawbone, Dr. Morgan can treat your smile so that you can safely receive an implant denture. The best way to determine your candidacy is to schedule your consultation!
