Holiday Miles and Healthy Smiles: Travel Tips for Your Dental Health

There’s almost nothing as logistically heavy as holiday travel, and that often means packed schedules, long drives, and busy airports. In all the excitement, it can be easy to let your dental health slide. However, skipping your routine for even a few days can increase your risk of oral health issues—and no one wants that while they’re supposed to be relaxing. Fret not! With a little planning and discipline, you can keep your smile healthy on the go.

Pack a Dental Care Kit

Start by putting together small dental care kits for each member of the family. This should be a small bag that easily fits into your luggage and includes everything you need to keep your pearly whites perfect. Be sure to include a travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash.

It can also be helpful to include an emergency kit with supplies like gauze, a tooth preservation kit, dental wax, and a small mirror—just in case.

Don’t Skip Your Routine

Travel days can feel long and unpredictable, but tiny rituals like your oral care routine can be a tremendous help for grounding yourself.  Even when you’re tired from a long day of travel, don’t skip out on those two minutes of brushing. Set reminders on your phone if you think you might forget!

Keep an Eye on Your Travel Snacks

There’s nothing better than sweet treats, sodas, and flavored coffee drinks when you’re on a long drive. Enjoying these in moderation is fine, but try not to sip and snack on them all day. Frequent sugar exposure feeds cavity-causing bacteria, increasing your risk of dental issues. When you can, drink water. Your teeth and your body will both thank you.

See Your Dentist Before or After Your Trip

If you know you’ll be traveling for an extended time, consider scheduling a checkup before you leave. A professional cleaning can remove built-up plaque and tartar, and your dentist can address small issues before they turn into emergencies on the road. If an early visit isn’t possible, schedule one soon after the holidays to keep your smile on track.

With these simple strategies at your fingertips, your holiday trip just got a little less stressful and a lot more prepared. Decreasing the risk of dental emergencies and keeping your smile in ship-shape will help make this holiday season one to remember.
